Hoorn, the historic harbor town on the IJsselmeer, is the perfect starting point for scenic cycling trips through West-Friesland. From the cobbled streets and old VOC buildings in the city center, it takes only a few minutes before you’re riding through open polders where the horizon stretches endlessly and the wind becomes your riding partner.
One of the most beautiful routes is the Westfriese Omringdijk, a 126-kilometer-long dike that encircles much of the region. From Hoorn, you can ride part of it towards Enkhuizen or Medemblik. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views: the IJsselmeer on one side, and green fields, traditional farmhouses, and small villages on the other. If you prefer a more relaxed ride, the region also offers charming countryside routes, such as the Drechterland route, where you’ll encounter old windmills, tulip fields in spring, and traditional ribbon villages.
